Troubleshooting

Most failures name their cause. This page maps the messages you are likely to see to what happened and what to do next.

Check your version first

vibe-trading --version
pip install -U vibe-trading-ai

Several of the failures below were fixed in 0.1.16. Upgrade before digging further.

Failed · no_progress

The agent stops when eight tool-call rounds in a row bring no new successful result. It is a budget against loops, not a crash. Since 0.1.16 the stop message lists each call that produced nothing, with its reason and how often it happened. Typical causes:

  • A data source was down or rate-limited. Try again later, or name another source in the prompt ("use Yahoo").
  • The model kept guessing file paths. Fixed in 0.1.16: read_file now names the folders it may read and lists directories.
  • A long comparison forgot what it had fetched and fetched it again. Fixed in 0.1.16: compaction follows the model's real context window.

The same failing call is refused from its second failure. Changing the request, or starting a new run, clears that.

A failed run shows 0 steps

Before 0.1.16, only a completed run saved its tool trail, so a failed or cancelled run showed "0 steps" in the history. From 0.1.16 every run keeps its steps.

(omitted※) in an answer

A figure that could not be matched to the data fetched in this session was cut from the answer, and the ※ footnote says how many were. Ask the agent to fetch the data or run the backtest first, then ask again. Checked numbers explains the rules.

Context-length errors

Since 0.1.16, a context-length error from the provider is compacted and retried, and the limit it reports is used for the rest of the run. If your model is not in the built-in catalog, set VIBE_TRADING_CONTEXT_WINDOW to its real window. Remove any TOKEN_THRESHOLD line; it is ignored.

A US ticker returns an error

US symbols need the .US suffix: AAPL.US, not AAPL. The error says so: US equity symbols must include the .US suffix. Other markets have their own suffixes; see Data sources.

No frontend build found

You installed from PyPI, which ships the API but not the built web UI. Use Docker, or a source checkout with vibe-trading setup, as described in Quick start.

403 from another device

Without API_AUTH_KEY, sensitive endpoints answer only requests from the same machine. Set the key and enter it in Settings on the other device.

Codex refuses the model

With ChatGPT sign-in, gpt-5.4 is refused for ChatGPT accounts. 0.1.16 defaults to gpt-6-sol; if your .env names an older model, change LANGCHAIN_MODEL_NAME.

Reporting a problem

Open an issue on GitHub with the version, the provider and model, and the stop message. vibe-trading --trace RUN_ID replays what the run did. Never paste an API key or a broker credential.
